Artist Bio
Antea Roberts of TheCeramery, grew up in Philadelphia and took art classes at Fleisher Art Memorial, Starr Garden and The Clay Studio starting when she was five years old. She attended Appel Farm Arts Camp for seven years and went on to teach ceramics there for seven summers between 2006 and 2014. Antea graduated from Corcoran College of Art and Design in 2008 with a BFA is Fine Arts/Ceramics.
Antea’s work has been exhibited at B Square Gallery in Philadelphia, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, Eclipse Gallery in Lansdale PA and Ceramic Concept in Philadelphia. The Ceramery can be found at South Street Art Mart in Philly. She also vends at local juried craft shows.
Antea loves using vintage plaster molds to slip cast (though currently press molding) and make composite works of art and utilitarian wares. She mainly works with cast doll parts and finds them cute, not creepy! She was an avid Cabbage Patch Doll lover as a child and they bring her joy. A second firing of vintage overglaze decals and lusters adds that last bit of flair to her beebs.
Her hand built ceramics are reminiscent of unrefined clay. Rough edges are left raw yet usable. Necklaces, bowls and mugs are enhanced with naturalistic textures including shells and wood. Post firing she includes natural gemstones in her jewelry and embellishes art with wood, fake plants, resin and feathers.
Antea also makes mosaics utilizing her broken ceramics and includes bought and found glass and tiles.
Antea currently teaches beginner adult classes in clay, and is working towards making her own teaching studio.
